Gemma at work

I re-trained as a mortgage broker during the pandemic. Before this, I worked in a financial role within fashion/retail.

I decided to retrain as retail was hit hard through Covid, and I really wanted to have a  job which was more face to face in terms of customers, and also more local. I didn’t want to commute!

I decided to look at being a mortgage broker initially after getting my first mortgage. I spoke to a couple of advisers and thought they rushed or didn’t explain things clearly, and just weren’t good communicators. I love numbers, houses, and people and thought I could do this better than them. That was enough for me to start my CeMAP qualification.

After sitting the exams, I got my first job in an estate agency. This was an amazing experience of being an “in-house” broker during the busiest housing market in recent years!

I learnt a lot about the mortgage and housing markets. I spent three years in that business before moving on to Mortgage Medics.

I have so many proud moments in my career. I think I’m proud every time a first-time buyer gets into their new home. It means so much to them because they’ve often worked so hard to get a deposit, and it’s such a great achievement.

The thing I like most about my job is the variety. Everyone is different, so every case is different. I wouldn’t want a finance job that didn’t involve people.

The types of people I most enjoy working with are those who are changing their lives for the better. A lot of people fall into this category!

Gemma outside of work

I grew up in Sussex but spent my twenties in London. I live in Hove with my husband and English bulldog.

I’d say my biggest passions are food and travel (and my dog!).

I’m lucky enough to have travelled a lot, from riding horses through the desert in Bolivia, to racing a rickshaw across India,  and more recently getting married while volunteering at an animal sanctuary in South Africa.

Currently, though, I’m just working my way through Brighton and Hove’s restaurants and bars…

Gemma in the spotlight

On an ideal weekend, you can find me:

Walking my dog on the beach, followed by a lazy afternoon strolling through Brighton and a lovely roast with my husband.

My favourite holiday destination is:

Romania or South Africa! Ask me again tomorrow and it’ll be different.

My favourite song to play in the car is:

Anything on Kisstory Radio, very loud.

The first album I bought was:

Thriller by Michael Jackson.

If I could be any fictional character, I would be:

Hermione Granger.

If I could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, I would win a medal in:

Reading. A bit boring, but I can really commit to a good book.

When the dessert menu arrives, I’m looking for:

The cocktail menu.

The three qualities that draw me to new people are:

Positivity, honesty, and fun.

My pet peeve is:

Waiting…

The best gift I’ve ever received is:

My dog Bobbi!

The three people at my dream dinner party would be:

The Queen, Julius Caesar, and Bob Marley.

The three small things that make my day better are:

A cuddle with my dog, making someone else feel good, and getting someone a mortgage offer!

Three things I haven’t done so far include:

Come face to face with a great white shark, been on holiday in England, and been to Paris!

Gemma’s dislikes

  • Rainy summers
  • Instant coffee
  • Inflation
