Sam Murphy

Managing Director

Sam at work

I co-founded the business in 2007 with Jon Bloomfield. Before that, I worked for Barclays/Woolwich and an independent estate agency.

I don’t do much client work these days, as my time is spent running the business. But my areas of expertise are later-life lending and working with high net worth clients.

There have been many proud moments for Mortgage Medics. But the one that stands out the most is winning an award for best overall quality at the L&G Mortgage Club Awards in 2021. We’d just come out of Covid and lockdowns, so it represented a great team achievement.

The three things I love most about my job are helping my team achieve their full potential; jumping into action and making a plan in times of challenge; and creating a culture of trust and respect.

The types of people I most enjoy working with are honest, determined, and respectful.

Sam outside of work

I live in Hove with my partner Jack and our two cats, Otto and Dolly.

Outside of work, I’m a keen football fan, cyclist, and snowboarder. I also take an interest in cricket and will give watching or playing most sports a try.

I’ve recently started learning the piano and Italian, both using apps.

I love to travel, but I’m not a sun worshipper. So winter sports and cooler climes are my go-to, rather than the tropics.

I also love any excuse to eat out. I enjoy trying new restaurants when they open, especially in Brighton & Hove, which has such an incredible array of eateries.

Sam in the spotlight

On an ideal weekend, you can find me:

Seeing friends and family, watching football, and (maybe) getting some exercise.

My favourite holiday destination is:

The Austrian Alps.

My favourite song to play in the car:

As a kid, I was obsessed with Queen, so ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a special song for me, especially after watching Wayne’s World when I was younger. As an adult, I usually listen to a dance or house music playlist, something that makes me want to sing along and dance in my seat while nobody is watching.

The first album I bought:

I think it was Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

If I could be any fictional character, I would be:

Marty McFly – I’d love to time travel!

If I could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, I would win a medal in:

Making the best scrambled eggs.

When the dessert menu arrives, I’m looking for:

Some kind of platter with a bit of everything on – probably meant for two!

The three qualities that draw me to new people are:

Integrity, being interesting, and having a positive attitude.

My pet peeve is:

When people choose to be unhelpful.

The best gift I’ve ever received is:

Life, at this point in history and in this part of the world.

The three people at my dream dinner party would be:

Richard Branson, Harvey Milk, and the great-grandfather I never knew.

The three small things that make my day better are:

Sunshine, a positive attitude, and exercise.

Three things I haven’t done so far include:

A skydive, jury service, and said no to a buffet!
